    Why UEM is moving beyond MDM for today's connected devices

    Think about a typical enterprise setup around 2010. A few hundred laptops and desktops, managed through traditional device management tools, plus a handful of smartphones under a mobile device management (MDM) platform. The estate was small and largely uniform, so a couple of consoles were enough to keep everything under control.

    That is no longer the world we manage.

    Device ecosystems are much broader now. Alongside laptops and mobiles, enterprises manage IoT sensors, self-service kiosks, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, smart displays, industrial edge systems, and other connected endpoints. Many of these devices lack a screen, keyboard, or even a standard user interface. They run different operating systems, different protocols, and very different operational models.

    Building a unified endpoint management (UEM) portfolio creates an approach that fits the full endpoint ecosystem enterprises now depend on. Getting there starts with understanding why the old model worked, and where today's devices have moved beyond it.

    What traditional MDM was built to solve

    MDM was built for a valid problem. As smartphones and laptops became part of day-to-day work, IT needed a way to push policies, configure devices, secure data, and remotely protect corporate information if a device was lost or compromised.

    That model worked well because it was built around a few simple assumptions:

    • Most devices had a user behind them.
    • Most devices were interactive and could respond to prompts or updates.
    • Most devices were checked on a normal cycle, even if they had been offline for some time.
    • Most devices ran common operating systems with standard management support.

    As a result, traditional MDM matured into a strong platform for managing employee endpoints. It still does that job well in many environments. But today’s growth is happening in device categories that follow a different set of rules.

    Where there’s opportunity beyond traditional MDM

    Four device categories show where enterprises are outgrowing traditional MDM, and what better management makes possible.

    1. IoT devices

    IoT has become one of the largest device categories. Sensors, meters, controllers, and trackers now span offices, factories, warehouses, and field operations. IoT Analytics estimated 21.1 billion connected IoT devices globally in 2025, up 14% year over year, and forecasts nearly 39 billion by 2030. In many environments, these devices already outnumber traditional user endpoints.

    These devices work differently from laptops. Most are headless, always on, and running firmware rather than a standard operating system. They speak protocols that legacy management platforms were never built to handle. An MDM tool may offer some visibility, but rarely the depth these devices need.

    The opportunity: Devices that have historically fallen outside any management framework become governed, observable assets for the first time.

    2. Kiosk devices

    Kiosks present a different kind of management challenge. Many run Windows or Android, so MDM enrollment is technically possible. But that does not mean they are being managed in the right way.

    A kiosk must stay locked to a specific experience, recover automatically if an application crashes, keep peripherals like printers, scanners, and card readers working, and restart at the right time, not mid-transaction. That is operational control, which goes well beyond what standard MDM was designed to deliver.

    The opportunity: Kiosks that are consistently available and self-recovering deliver a better experience for the people using them and free up IT teams to focus on higher-value work..

    3. POS terminals

    POS terminals handle payment transactions, customer data, and strict compliance requirements, often across distributed locations with no local IT presence.

    That combination of sensitivity and scale means the management platform must support secure remote operations, certificate management, patching, and rapid issue resolution as standard. A control gap can quickly become a revenue problem, a compliance problem, or both.

    The opportunity: Organizations that can manage POS terminals remotely with confidence turn a high-effort, high-risk environment into a well-governed one without needing boots on the ground at every site.

    4. Operational technology (OT) devices

    OT environments have historically been managed separately from corporate IT, with specialist tools and long maintenance cycles. That separation is narrowing as more industrial and edge devices are connected, driven by demand for telemetry, remote diagnostics, and better operational visibility.

    But OT realities remain: proprietary protocols, long life spans, and low tolerance for unplanned downtime. These devices require a management approach different from laptops. Leaving them outside the enterprise management model creates a blind spot that grows as connectivity increases.

    The opportunity: Organizations that bring OT devices under a unified management model gain real-time telemetry, remote diagnostics, and predictive insights across environments that were harder to monitor in isolation.

    What the next-generation approach looks like

    These four device categories each require management on their own terms. A UEM model designed around the full endpoint ecosystem, rather than the user device, gives IT and operations one clear view across the environment.

    This is where many programs go wrong. The goal is not a single tool that runs on every device. If you push OT systems and sensors onto an approach built for laptops, you add risk rather than remove it. The goal is one clear view. Let each device type be managed as needed but make sure they all feed into the same picture of security, compliance, and device health. That shared view is the hard part and what makes the model work.

    A few practical principles guide a UEM approach:

    • Unified visibility: Teams can see device health, compliance, risk, and operational status across all endpoint categories.
    • Non-user, always-on device support: The model handles firmware, telemetry, automated recovery, maintenance windows, and remote operations without depending on a user.
    • Protocol-aware management: The management layer adapts to the operating models and protocols each device uses, instead of forcing every endpoint into the same control pattern.
    • IT and OT alignment: IT and OT teams work from the same visibility and management approach, preventing disconnected systems with different rules.

    Expanding UEM beyond traditional device types gives organizations an ecosystem that is more secure, more resilient, and easier to govern.

    Why this shift matters now

    This is not the first time device management has had to catch up with reality. Mobile started as a side conversation and later became a core part of enterprise management. The organizations that recognized that early were better prepared when device use changed.

    The same pattern is repeating, but the scope is wider. IoT sensors, kiosks, POS terminals, and OT-connected endpoints are all becoming part of the enterprise ecosystem. Most of them fall outside what traditional MDM was built to handle.

    The blind spot only grows from here as more device categories come online. Closing it now means moving beyond traditional device types and building a UEM portfolio that covers every connected endpoint the business depends on.
