Why CSUMB chose Unisys

California State University Monterey Bay (Cal State Monterey Bay) chose Unisys for our proven experience and hands-on, collaborative approach to solving complex integration challenges together. As a trusted partner with significant integration experience across the CSU Chancellor's Office and other campuses, Unisys understands how people, processes and technology intersect in higher education environments.

Other key factors included Unisys’ ability to provide:

  • End-to-end platform management, including deployment and management of the Boomi integration platform infrastructure in AWS with CloudOps, SecOps and FinOps services
  • API development resources to augment campus staff as needed, ensuring that Cal State Monterey Bay could maintain flexibility and control throughout the engagement

Cal State Monterey Bay had long relied on the Boomi platform to integrate campus and third-party applications across its on-premises environment. The university recognized that cloud-based integration could unify institutional data, support predictive analytics and strengthen data-driven decision-making. It adopted the CSU Chancellor’s Office centralized Boomi iPaaS, delivered as a Unisys-managed cloud service.

With the shared Boomi iPaaS in place, Cal State Monterey Bay could shift resources from platform management and security to building integrations. This change enabled the university to focus on student outcomes and adopt a more reliable and scalable development process. To streamline enhancements and create a consistent way to build integrations, the university began migrating its on-premises integrations to the Boomi iPaaS on AWS. New integrations and applications would be built and hosted there in line with the Chancellor’s Office strategy.

Cal State Monterey Bay needed to migrate its on-premises Boomi API integrations to AWS and connect them to the Unisys-managed Boomi iPaaS to expand integration capabilities while controlling costs. To maintain performance, security and continuity, the university needed to update its integration workflows, campus infrastructure and network connectivity. These updates maintained performance, security and continuity.

The scope was significant. It included 64 distinct processes and multiple integrations spanning directory image naming, room assignments, student master and campus groups data, vaccination records, and software platforms such as Maxient, Okta, Salesforce, TutorTrac, and web checkout workflows.

Given the complexity and breadth of the migration, Cal State Monterey Bay needed a partner with deep integration expertise and a track record of successful implementations across the CSU system.

The Unisys team assessed every on-premises integration, identified key dependencies and confirmed the Boomi platform’s full compatibility with AWS. The team also validated network connectivity, implemented firewall rule updates, configured web proxies, and conducted end-to-end testing.

Next, Unisys migrated Boomi processes from the Cal State Monterey Bay on-premises instance to Boomi in AWS, configured extensions and updated testing platforms. The team deployed the integrations across production, development and test environments to ensure consistency and reliability. They verified performance at each stage.

Throughout the migration, Unisys partnered closely with Cal State Monterey Bay stakeholders, aligning teams and keeping everyone moving together. The Unisys team ensured the university had the right resources, information, and support to perform migrations efficiently. At the same time, Cal State Monterey Bay provided the necessary access for testing, authentication, and troubleshooting.

Together, the teams produced a detailed network connectivity diagram for Boomi iPaaS, an updated integrations document with new endpoints and a fully successful cutover from on-premises to the Boomi iPaaS service in AWS.

The Boomi iPaaS delivery operates through three key partners working in concert:

  • Cal State Monterey Bay directs the effort, focusing on the university’s goals and student needs.
  • Unisys deploys and fully manages the Boomi integration platform infrastructure in the AWS cloud, providing CloudOps, SecOps and FinOps services. Unisys also provides API development resources as needed to augment campus staff.
  • The Chancellor's Office campus management system (CMS) team manages the Boomi software environment (including patches and updates); delivers ongoing enhanced API offerings; enables campuses to integrate with CMS systems; and provides education, training and strategic partnership support.

Building momentum for the future

The successful migration positions Cal State Monterey Bay to accelerate innovation and respond faster to emerging needs. With a cloud-based integration platform, the university can adapt to new application requirements and emerging technologies without being constrained by its infrastructure.

Cal State Monterey Bay’s success demonstrates how higher education institutions can modernize integration architectures while controlling costs and maintaining operational continuity. As the university continues to expand its data integration capabilities, the scalable Boomi iPaaS infrastructure provides the flexibility and performance needed to support student success initiatives.

Delivering exceptional time to value

Unisys completed the competitively priced integration project in under four months, saving Cal State Monterey Bay approximately $50,000 compared to similar proposals from other vendors. The accelerated delivery avoided nearly eight months of work by Cal State Monterey Bay IT staff, freeing those resources for other initiatives.

With integrations now in the cloud and leveraging the Boomi iPaaS service, Cal State Monterey Bay can revise and accelerate future business processes and integration development with greater data consistency and reliability. The collaboration brought together top technical and functional resources to accelerate execution and establish a scalable approach that can grow with the university in the long term.
