Security - Secure Commerce and In-Transit Visibility
Secure Commerce and In-Transit Visibility. Integrated.
Global supply chains are hyper-connected models of efficiency … and risk. The global import/export market exceeds US$6 trillion, with 15 million containers continually being transported on 46,000 vessels through 4,000 global ports. Each link and node in the supply chain is subject to a variety of threats—from strikes to storms, from fraud to terrorism—yet only 5 percent of containers can be inspected.
Unisys Secure Commerce solutions secure goods as they move through the port ‘nodes’ of the supply chain. Unisys In-Transit Visibility solutions provide visibility to the status of goods ‘in motion’ as they move across each ‘link’ in the supply chain.
Secure Commerce
Ports globally process well over 200 million container movements per year. While under great pressure to maintain security, port operators are penalized for supply chain interruptions.
Unisys has developed a unique, collaborative approach to manage risk and prioritize responses. By employing a roadmap approach to develop a risk management plan, stakeholders gain a clear view of the threats facing them, the solutions necessary to address those threats, and the viability of planned and in-process projects. (Of course, Unisys can then design, develop, test, implement, and manage the solution, which could include identification and credentialing systems, worker access control, and non-intrusive container inspection.) This best practice approach results in a more organized and effective security strategy that avoids organizational disconnects and, for many clients, takes full advantage of available Homeland Security funding—with the ultimate result of free and secure trade flow through the port.
In-Transit Visibility
As William Langewiesche observes in The Outlaw Sea, “forty thousand merchant ships … wander the world with little or no regulation.” This includes the 20-plus freighters estimated to be owned or controlled by al Qaeda.
You need visibility on the status of goods at key stages of the shipping process in order to meet service commitments, and to enable adherence to industry and government mandates around the transit of goods.
The Unisys In-Transit Visibility solution is designed to automatically set up key supply-chain and transportation milestones and alert staff to exceptions—before they know that there is a problem. To anticipate physical and communication challenges, our solution uses multiple traceability technologies such as barcodes, active and passive RFID, GPS, and satellite tracking. Communications include cellular, broadband, wired, and satellite, among others.
We integrate systems to deliver real-time actionable knowledge of location, identification, environmental conditions, and compliance with mandated procedures and documentation. We implement technologies to prevent theft, detect tampering, and deter counterfeiting, improving the overall trust of the supply chain network.

Flat pack
Overhauling an industry of which you know little is not easy, but neither is it impossible. In 1956 Malcolm McLean, a trucker from North Carolina, launched the first “intermodal” shipping container, which could be transferred easily between lorries, trains and ships. It revolutionised the transport of goods by abolishing the traditional (and back-breaking) system of “break bulk” loading...
