UK’s Nationwide Building Society Seeing Benefits from Expanded Unisys IT Services and Enterprise Computing Technology

Unisys support services, mainframe upgrade and advanced storage solutions help boost Nationwide's growth strategy and optimise IT investment

Swindon, England, May 17, 2007 – Three services and technology initiatives recently undertaken with Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) by the United Kingdom’s largest building society, Nationwide, are bringing the building society marked cost efficiencies and operational benefits. Unisys is helping Nationwide, a long-time customer, overhaul key IT infrastructure, including storage and mainframes.

The initiatives include:

  • Technology support and maintenance services for the building society’s Unisys ClearPath Dorado mainframes and associated peripherals;
  • An upgrade for ClearPath Dorado mainframes in Nationwide’s Swindon technology centre and Wellingborough development and disaster recovery centre; and
  • Implementation of a high-performance EMC disk storage system to support database-intensive applications and customer service requirements.

“Unisys services and technology have provided critical support for Nationwide’s demanding growth and customer service enhancement strategy for years,” said Michael Humphreys, IT Director, Nationwide Building Society. “Nationwide anticipates that the upgraded ClearPath systems, enhanced storage and extended support Unisys provides will enable us to continue growing and accommodating an expanding customer base more effectively while lowering our IT costs over the long-term.”

Nationwide has emerged as a leader in using enterprise-class computing technology to enhance customer service and streamline operations. The company has deployed Unisys ClearPath Dorado mainframes using innovative pay-for-use features to increase processing capacity by a minimum of 25 percent, giving customers faster access to online services. The deployment has been key in establishing a real-time infrastructure, where information technology directly and dynamically serves strategic business processes.

A key part of Nationwide Building Society’s expansion strategy is a planned merger with the UK’s Portman Building Society, which is expected to become effective by the end of August 2007, subject to confirmation by the Financial Services Authority.

“Unisys is proud to help Nationwide Building Society extend and support an IT infrastructure that strengthens secure business operations and accommodates growth as Nationwide’s business requirements evolve in real-time,” said Nick Wilson, vice president and managing director, UK, Middle East and Africa, Unisys. “Unisys expertise in financial services, our services delivery capabilities and strength in enterprise computing are helping advance Nationwide’s strategy, operations and customer service and are putting them in a prime market position.”
