Georgia Aquarium Reaches Top 10 in 2007 InfoWorld 100 Awards with Help from Unisys Servers

World’s largest aquarium taps Unisys to keep real-time infrastructure running swimmingly

BLUE BELL, Pa., December 4, 2007 – Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that the Georgia Aquarium, a Unisys client, has been named a 2007 InfoWorld 100 winner, placing among the top 10 honorees. The prestigious award honored the aquarium for its creativity in deploying enterprise technology to streamline operations and accommodate visitors.

The InfoWorld 100 awards celebrate real-world IT projects that use technology in smart, innovative and creative ways to meet business and technical objectives.

The Georgia Aquarium – the world’s largest – opened its doors in November 2005, with Unisys an integral IT partner in the non-profit’s daily operations. Everything about the aquarium, which houses more than 100,000 marine animals of 500 different species, is state-of-the-art, and its day-to-day operations hinge on the success of the IT infrastructure.

“We have worked tirelessly to build an IT infrastructure that continually provides the best possible experience for those who live, work and visit here,” said Beach Clark, vice president of Information Technology at the Georgia Aquarium. “Unisys servers and support services have been instrumental in our fulfilling that objective since the day we opened.”

Unisys ES7000/one Enterprise Servers are linchpins in a real-time infrastructure where IT resources are deployed dynamically to support minute-to-minute changes in business processes critical to the aquarium’s operations. The Unisys servers support a range of the aquarium’s business-critical applications – including ticketing and handling real-time crowd control for up to 3,800 visitors at a time; tracking and monitoring the feedings for the animals in the aquarium’s exhibits; and running the water filtration systems that let the aquarium create eight million gallons of salt water from Atlanta tap water.

“The Georgia Aquarium deserves to be honored for deploying an IT infrastructure directly aligned with its most pressing business needs,” said Mary Ellen Fortier, vice president, Marketing, Unisys Systems and Technology. “Unisys is pleased to play a part in helping the aquarium achieve that goal. It’s gratifying to know that Unisys ES7000/one servers are delivering major benefits for the aquarium’s management and for visitors from around the world.”

The four Unisys ES7000/one systems, based on Intel processor technology, serve as the hub for the real-time infrastructure comprising hardware, databases, workstations and networks. They also provide the aquarium with the capability to virtualize parts of the environment – enabling completion of more tasks more quickly – if that becomes necessary to address capacity requirements.

Among other critical tasks, the Unisys ES7000/one servers:

  • Run a ticketing database that can handle significant spikes in purchases;
  • Manage a database that keeps records on the care of each animal in the aquarium;
  • Maintain an educational database, employing Microsoft SharePoint enterprise content management software, of 2,000 high-quality photos covering the 500 animal species housed in the aquarium. The photos are all indexed and tagged for easy retrieval; and
  • Retain comprehensive facility records, such as those on water quality and other important environmental factors.

“Whether ushering legacy systems into the agile era or revolutionizing how their companies leverage technology to meaningful ends, this year's winners are inspiration and proof that striking a new path in IT can reap deep organizational rewards,” said Jason Snyder, senior editor, InfoWorld.

This honor for the Georgia Aquarium marks the second year in a row that a Unisys client was honored with the InfoWorld 100 Award. Last year, the Nassau County, New York Division of Health & Human Services was recognized by InfoWorld for its innovative migration to real-time infrastructure deployed on Unisys ES7000/one Enterprise Servers.
