Unisys Strikes First with New TPC-E BenchmarkUnisys ES7000/one Enterprise Servers set the bar with first results delivered using the new TPC-E transaction processing benchmark
BLUE BELL, Pa., July 12, 2007 – Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced the first benchmark result delivered by any computer systems vendor for the Transaction Processing Performance Council’s (TPC) new TPC-E benchmark test. The test was run on Unisys powerful ES7000/one Enterprise Server and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. The result establishes the ES7000’s position at the top of its class in performance, economics and scalability in the Microsoft Windows environment.
The TPC-E benchmark, the much-anticipated successor to the venerable 15-year-old TPC-C benchmark, was introduced on March 19, 2007. The new test comprises an online transaction processing (OLTP) performance analysis designed to stress a variety of hardware and software platforms that reflect a modern IT environment.
Instead of running as a purely academic benchmark, TPC-E instead models the traffic and transaction patterns of a brokerage firm. The test models a variety of back-end processing data and front-end customers who generate transactions typical of a brokerage house – account inquiries, online trades and market research. The brokerage firm also interacts with outside financial markets to execute orders and update relevant account and market information.
Using the TPC-E benchmark, Unisys was able to run a series of tests on its powerful ES7000/one Enterprise Server platform in the Microsoft Windows and SQL Server environment. TPC-E reports two primary metrics for devices under test, covering both performance and economic viability. Performance is measured as “transactions per second for the E benchmark” (tpsE) while economic efficiency is shown as dollars per tpsE ($/tpsE) calculated as three-year cost of ownership divided by tpsE. The ES7000/one Enterprise Server turned in impressive results with performance reaching 660.85 tpsE and an attractive economic analysis at $1777.18/tpsE. The ES7000/one is available now and all tested components will be available by September 28, 2007.
”Today’s database applications are much more complex and demanding than those of 15 years ago. The new TPC-E benchmark gives the database industry a high quality OLTP performance test consistent with today’s real application workloads,” said Dave Campbell, technical fellow for SQL Server at Microsoft Corp. “The TPC has been working on this benchmark for four years and we believe they’ve done a great job defining a workload and benchmark which will drive product innovation that provides real customer value. It is exciting to see Unisys publish the first audited TPC-E result today and we look forward to many more.”
The ES7000/one Enterprise Server series, priced from $45,000, represents Unisys high-end vision for standards based enterprise transaction computing in a fully open systems environment. This flexible platform was the first server configurable with either the dual-core Intel Itanium 2 or the dual-core Intel Xeon processors. The system supports up to 32 sockets of either class and is further backed by a variety of high-end storage and networking connectivity options to deliver best-in-class performance in any customer scenario.
“With the results delivered by the Unisys ES7000/one Enterprise Server, Unisys has again proven to be an industry leader in deploying enterprise-class infrastructures powered by Microsoft technology,” said Jerry Buggert, director, Product Development and Technology Performance Group, Unisys. ”We invite the rest of the industry to quickly adopt this vital new comparative tool.”
